Merino Wool: Myths Busted

Merino Wool: Myths Busted

When you think of wool, it’s likely that you’re instantly transported to the super itchy, uncomfortably hot sweater your parents gave you to stay warm every winter. With that discomfort still top of mind after all these years, why would you even consider a car seat made with Merino Wool?  Well to start, with its super-fine fibers, Merino Wool is quite different than its counterpart, and offers some pretty cool perks, too.  We looked at some of the common misconceptions of Merino Wool… and then we debunked them so you can see how ideal of a textile it is to keep baby comfortable in their car seat.

Myth #1: It’s itchy… FALSE!

Yes, yes, we already know you’re remembering the Christmas sweater when you were 8. But Merino Wool fibers are actually much thinner and softer than regular wool, and in fact, they are 1/3 the diameter of human hair. This smaller diameter is more flexible, so it softly bends when pressed against the skin, providing the velvety, luxurious feel that is well-loved by fashion designers AND is perfectly suited to sit against your baby’s skin in their infant car seat.

Myth #2: It’s only for cold weather… FALSE!

Merino Wool is a thermoregulating material, which naturally reacts to changes in body temperature. When there is a chill in the air, the natural crimps and creases in the fibers trap air and act as insulation, but when it’s toasty out, the porous fibers wick sweat away from baby’s skin and the moisture stored within the fiber will evaporate and cool the air between the fabric and skin. Basically, this smart textile will help keep your baby warm when it’s cool and cool when it’s warm.

Myth #3: My baby will get extra sweaty… FALSE!

As mentioned, while busting the myth above, wool wicks away moisture, and in fact moves the moisture vapor before it turns to sweat, unlike synthetic fabrics that only remove sweat in its liquid state.

Myth #4: It’s hard to keep clean… FALSE!

Merino Wool is naturally stain-resistant! And because of its moisture-retention properties, Merino Wool fibers prevent the build-up of static-electricity that would attract lint and dirt. These anti-static abilities help keep the textile clean, but if it does get dirty, we’ve constructed our Merino Wool Infant Car Seat liners so they are machine-washable. Win-win for parents and babies!

Myth #5: Wool stinks… FALSE!

The ability of wool to effectively handle moisture does not give bacteria an optimal environment for its survival. Plus, the structure of the Merino Wool fiber has a naturally odor-free capability, so it excels at repelling and retaining unpleasant smells.
